Women recount their experiences with 'chemo brain,' and researchers ... - Los Angeles Times Blogs Posted: 21 Sep 2009 12:52 PM PDT Once a little-discussed side effect of cancer treatment, the mental fogginess known as chemo brain is finally getting the attention it deserves. Now researchers at Mayo Medical School and UCLA offer a closer look at breast cancer survivors' experiences with the condition.
Their new study, "Confronting chemobrain: an in-depth look at survivors' reports of impact on work, social networks, and health care response," is published in the September issue of Journal of Cancer Survivorship. The introduction states: "An increasing number of women survive breast cancer. Of the 11.4 million cancer survivors in the United States alone, female breast cancer survivors represent the largest population at 23%, or 2.6 million women. However, survival may come at a cost for some, as biomedical researchers have begun to acknowledge that cancer treatment itself (surgery, radiation, chemotherapy) can result in long-term physiological damage, which in turn can vastly impact quality of life." One woman described her experience in this way: "You have to fight to make yourself remember numbers, The New York Times' Jane Brody recently offered her take on two new books about chemo brain: "Chemobrain" (Prometheus Books), by Ellen Clegg, a Boston Globe editor, and "Your Brain After Chemo" (Da Capo Press), by Dr. Daniel H. Silverman, a researcher at UCLA, and Idelle Davidson, a journalist and former breast cancer patient. And the American Cancer Society offers these tips on managing chemo brain. They may not be a cure, but increased attention will likely lead to greater understanding of how to reduce the condition's severity. -- Tami Dennis Photo: Chemotherapy drugs -- powerful and problematic. BUZZ: Will John Edwards Own Up to Lovechild? - People Posted: 21 Sep 2009 12:23 PM PDT What's up with John Edwards?
If you had him on Google Alert this weekend, your e-mail inbox would have been swamped after the New York Times published a story speculating about whether the two-time Democratic presidential candidate – who has already admitted to two-timing his wife of more than 30 years, Elizabeth Edwards – is ready to admit he fathered a child with a former campaign worker. In August 2008, Edwards, after earlier denials, confirmed that he had an affair with Rielle Hunter, a videographer he met on his 2008 campaign. At the time, Edwards, now 56, denied fathering a child, saying the relationship ended before Hunter's infant daughter was conceived. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Edwards, 60, is battling breast cancer, first diagnosed in 2004 and considered incurable. Scandalous DetailsNow, according to the Times, the disgraced North Carolina politician may be on the verge of acknowledging paternity of Hunter's 19-month-old daughter, Frances – just as a once-trusted aide is preparing to publish a book filled with damaging revelations.Among the details reportedly included in the book proposal written by former campaign worker Andrew Young – who once signed an affidavit stating Frances was his daughter, only to later rescind the claim – are several devastating bombshells: • In his book proposal, Young says Edwards pleaded with him to claim paternity of Hunter's daughter in an attempt to make the scandal go away, according to the newspaper. • Young claims Edwards told Hunter that he would marry her after Elizabeth's death – at a roof-top ceremony at a New York City hotel with live music from the Dave Matthews Band. • Young claims that he set up meetings between Hunter and Edwards so they could keep their relationship a secret. DNA Test? The Times own correspondent further fleshed out the drama, alleging that Edwards is now ready to fess up, but that his wife has delayed an announcement, and that Hunter's daughter's middle name, Quinn (similar to the Latin prefix for 'five') was chosen because the girl is Edwards' fifth child. (John and Elizabeth's oldest child, their son Wade, died in a car crash in 1996.)After the National Enquirer and North Carolina TV station WRAL reported last month that Edwards was ready to admit paternity, Elizabeth Edwards said on CNN that she hoped any DNA test and its results would be kept private. "I hope for the sake of this child that it happens, you know, in a quiet way," she told Larry King. Wade Smith, a Raleigh lawyer who represents Edwards, did not return PEOPLE's calls, but earlier issued a statement about the paternity rumors: "There may be a statement on that subject at some point, but there is no timetable and we will see how we feel about it as events unfold." In the meantime, Elizabeth and John Edwards continue to live together in their Chapel Hill, N.C., home and are frequently seen around town running errands together or shuttling their two youngest children to school. A grand jury has been convened to investigate whether the Edwards campaign made unlawful payments to Hunter. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

(Pink Sheets:MNTR) completed its FY 2008 audit in preparation for filing a self-registration statement with the SEC and applying to move from the Pink Sheets to begin being quoted on the Over-the-Counter Bulletin Board system. The move to the OTCBB was accelerated by the July 8, 2009 acquisition of a significant interest in Quantum Immunologics, Inc., a leading cancer immunotherapy company now in Phase I/II FDA breast cancer trials. At year end, Mentor Capital, Inc. had $1.25 per share in securities or financial assets which included $0.32 or $173,259 in cash against $34,823 in total non-shareholder liabilities. 546,117 shares were outstanding as of December 31, 2008. "Cause marketing" becoming popular again - McClatchy Posted: 21 Sep 2009 12:16 PM PDT By Debra Skodack | Kansas City StarRonda and Scott Gentry never thought about buying a slice of Spin pizza. That is, until it did some good. Then they bought a whole pizza — Italian and turkey sausage — last week, along with a special pizza for their dog Bulova. The Lees Summit fundraiser at Spin benefited the Wayside Waifs animal shelter. The Blue Springs couples special dinner is part of a growing segment of philanthropy called cause marketing. Simply put, it's when businesses and nonprofits get together to sell something to consumers that helps raise donations. Cause marketing is not a 5K run, but rather a structured business deal. It might be the sale of a pink blender, with a portion of the proceeds going to breast cancer research. It might be a massage, with some of the proceeds going to a domestic violence shelter. Cause marketing has been around for more than two decades, but the recession has prompted a boom. "We are your perfect cause-marketing people," Ronda Gentry said.
