Washington, DC, United States (AHN) - Gail McGovern, president and chief executive officer of the American Red Cross, is undergoing treatment for early stage breast cancer.

In a statement, the Red Cross said the cancer was detected in January during an annual exam. McGovern underwent outpatient surgery last month at Massachusetts General Hospital. She has begun daily radiation therapy that is expected to last from four to six weeks.

Doctors have deemed McGovern's prognosis as "excellent," and she will continue to work full-time at the organization's headquarters in Washington, D.C., although her travel will be reduced.

The 58-year old McGovern was treated for an unrelated breast cancer in 2006. A former Harvard Business School professor, she took the helm of Red Cross in 2008 just weeks after the earthquake in Sichuan, China, that killed nearly 70,000 people.

"I expect a full recovery, I've dealt with this before, I know what's in store, and I plan to fly through it as I did previously," she said in a statement.
