Women in Blue States Much More Likely to Be Stricken with Breast ... - Associated Content Posted: 02 Feb 2010 08:44 AM PST Message from fivefilters.org: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it. As set forth in the two correlation studies below, there is a statistically significant positive correlation between so-called Blue States and breast cancer rates among women. By contrast, there is a statistically significant negative correlation between Red States and breast cancer rates. Stated plainly, women in more Democratic (liberal) states are much more likely to be stricken with breast cancer than women in more Republican (conservative) states. Null Hypotheses 1. There is no correlation between Blue States and breast cancer rates among women. 2. There is no correlation between Red States and breast cancer rates among women. Alternative Hypotheses 1. There is a correlation between Blue States and breast cancer rates among women. 2. There is a correlation between Red States and breast cancer rates among women. Statistical Correlation Measure The statistical correlation measure used herein is the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient (denoted by r) which measures the linear correlation between two variables X and Y, giving a value between -1 and +1. The closer the r statistic is to +1, the greater the positive correlation between two variables. The closer the r statistic is to -1, the greater the negative correlation between two variables. For purposes of this study, an r statistic of +1 would indicate a perfect positive correlation between strongly partisan Republican or Democratic states and breast cancer rates among women. Alternatively, an r statistic of -1 would indicate a perfect negative correlation between strongly partisan Republican or Democratic states and breast cancer rates among women. An r statistic of 0 indicates no statistical correlation between partisanship and breast cancer rates among women. Data X variables are the Cook Partisan Voting Index (CPVI) measurements of how strongly a U.S. state leans toward one political party compared to the nation as a whole. Y variables are breast cancer rates per 100,000 women in each U.S. state. Critical Value Range -.28 to .28 (49 degrees of freedom at an alpha of .05; two-tailed test)* Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Nashville Christian girls basketball team wears pink to support breast ... - Nashville Tennessean Posted: 02 Feb 2010 12:47 PM PST Message from fivefilters.org: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it. The Nashville Christian Lady Eagles will once again don pink for a basketball game with the goal of raising money for breast cancer awareness. Tonight's match up for the school's girls' basketball team will have the Jo Byrns Lady Red Devils battling the pink-clad Lady Eagles for the school's second annual Women's Basketball Coaches Association Pink Zone initiative. Nashville Christian joined the effort last year with the intent to raise awareness and money for the Nashville chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. Yow, the former North Carolina State University women's basketball coach and a past president and founding member of the WBCA, died last year after losing her battle with cancer. During last year's Pink Zone game on Feb. 6, the Lady Eagles beat Houston County, 56-43. The gym was converted into a sea of pink as the players, students, faculty and community members all sported pink. Between donations and the student-purchased "Hoops for Hope" T-shirts, last year's game raised a total of $3,500. "The outpouring of support from everybody was incredible," NCS athletic director Ben Martin said of last year's game. "It's amazing in a small school like ours the amount of families affected by breast cancer." Martin's two sisters are breast cancer survivors. The disease also has touched the lives of some of the Lady Eagles. Player Tori Hulan's grandmother, also a survivor, attended last year's game. "She was really touched when we all came out in our pink jerseys," Hulan said. After that game, Martin said: "Our hope is for the event to grow bigger and bigger so we can keep writing bigger and bigger checks to the foundation." Nashville Christian will offer free admission to breast cancer survivors from the community. Survivors will be recognized during the game and will receive custom pink T-shirts. "We hope that all of these activities will make a huge impact for giving people hope for a cure and creating awareness among our students about breast cancer," Martin said of tonight's game. "We expect every student, girls and boys, to be wearing pink." Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Available tools: PDF Newspaper, Full Text RSS, Term Extraction. |
Guide to Types of Breast Cancer - Associated Content Posted: 02 Feb 2010 08:44 AM PST Message from fivefilters.org: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it. There is More Than One Type of Breast CancerBreast cancer is a word that strikes fear into the heart of any woman. Early diagnosis is essential in successful treatment plans. Prevention is also a key issue among women and men. Feeling a lump sends a cold numbing fear throughout the entire body and mind. I know this from personal experience. Fortunately, it wasn't cancerous. Not all lumps are. While only a licensed Doctor can make the diagnosis, reducing the risk factors by not smoking, wearing the proper sized bras, eating a proper diet and exercising are all preventative measures. If you have been diagnosed with pre-cancerous conditions, taking the medicine the doctor prescribes is essential. There are different types of breast cancer. Not all involve lumps; thus the importance of regular screenings and check ups. This cancer is unfortunately misdiagnosed as an infection or just lymphatic swelling. Often, there is no one single lump; rather the breast appears swollen and painful. There may be an unusual discharge from the nipple or a sudden bruise that doesn't seem to want to go away. These cancers have the ability to spread beyond the breast tissues into other parts of the body. Some spread slowly while others are frightening in their ability to attack the body. Early diagnosis is the best way to fight this type of cancer. This is a very rare type of breast cancer that occurs with an underlying second form of breast cancer. It's characterized by burning, itching, pain or tenderness in the nipple. Scientists haven't quite figured out exactly what causes it, but research is underway to answer this question. Right now, the only treatment is surgery. Further research may provide less drastic methods to treat it. Non-Invasive Breast Cancer Non-invasive or in situ cancer is found in the ducts or lobules of the breast. This cancer does not spread to other tissues. Like other cancers, there are aggressive and non-aggressive forms. Left untreated this cancer can certainly develop into more dangerous and invasive forms.
