A new Ontario study shows that popular antidepressant Paxil, shown here in a 2004 file photo, blocks the breast-cancer suppressing effects of the drug Tamoxifen.

A popular antidepressant eradicates the benefits of life-saving breast cancer drug tamoxifen, a new Ontario study shows.

The study of 2,430 women taking tamoxifen showed the drug's potent cancer-fighting capacity was lost in patients using paroxetine anti-depression drugs such as Paxil.

"If someone is on tamoxifen for five years ... and they're taking paroxetine the entire time, they've effectively not been on tamoxifen," said study co-author Dr. David Juurlink, a researcher with the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences.

"And what this study shows for the first time is that that translates into an increased risk of deaths because the patients are being deprived of a very important drug."

The study was published Monday in the British Medical Journal.

Conducted between 1993 and 2005 on women 66 and older, it showed that those treated with Paxil-like drugs for 40 per cent of the time they were taking tamoxifen had a significantly greater risk of dying of breast cancer within five years of diagnosis.

This combination resulted in one additional death for every 20 patients so treated, the study showed.

Juurlink said about 30 per cent of women taking tamoxifen were on antidepressants, and most of those were prescribed Paxil-like drugs.

While other antidepressants, most notably Prozac and Wellbutrin, can also interfere with tamoxifen's effectiveness, there are others that won't, Juurlink said.

"There are many other options out there that ... are almost certainly better choices for women who are receiving tamoxifen ... It's not a reason to withhold antidepressants."

Women taking Paxil with their tamoxifen should not stop the antidepressant abruptly, Juurlink said.

"There's a well-recognized withdrawal syndrome for people who stop it suddenly, so if it's going to be discontinued it needs to be tapered off over a couple of weeks," he said.

An email from Paxil maker GlaxoSmithKline Canada said the company had been aware of reported interactions between the two drugs and had posted a warning on the antidepressant's monograph.

"GSK will review these additional data and will work with regulatory authorities to determine next steps," the email said.

Poor Finances Increase Depression In Breast Cancer Patients - HULIQ.com

Research, and personal experience, reveal how financial status affects a person's overall mental and physical state. Few studies however, have analyzed the affects that socioeconomic status has on a person's psychological health after being diagnosed with a serious medical condition. Anxiety and depression can significantly alter breast cancer treatment benefits if not addressed. The study also revealed that a woman's education level or the presence of social support did not directly affect developing anxiety or depression.

The study, conducted on 487 women recently diagnosed with DCIS, were given questions about sociodemographic, psychosocial, and clinical characteristics from the onset of enrollment to nine months after their diagnosis. The results clearly revealed that women with financial hardships declared higher levels of anxiety and depression than women with no financial concerns. In fact, women with no financial hardship reported a decrease in anxiety and depression over time.

"Women with medium or low socioeconomic status are forced to manage competing stressors: the stress of financial hardship and the stress of a major health event," states Janet de Moor, MPH, PhD, of The Ohio State University College of Public Health, "Because these concomitant stressors leave women vulnerable to escalating distress after their DCIS diagnosis, women with medium or low financial status may benefit from psychosocial interventions."

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer and 1 out of 8 American women who live to be 85 years old will develop breast cancer.

This study was published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society.

If Bush said "corpseman", it would be all over CBS, NBC, PMSNBC, etc... and saying he's too stupid and ignorant of our military to be Commander in Chief.

Notice how you didn't hear this on ANY major network?

It's OBVIOUS Obama is ignorant of the military... he had hired an "expert" to teach him HOW to salute... they cannot report this. And they won't.

This is not to say Bush didn't say amazingly stupid things.... but those were reported. This? Never!

Obama is a study in excess as it breathes,,,Every excess can be seen in him. Excess of self admiration, self importance, self impact. For Obama,,He is IT and the rest are dangling little parts hanging like pregnant little chads from his persona....
All are to make him look like the best thing since WHITE BREAD heheheh.

Even if the woman HAD all the testing she "needed" according to Obama, that's no guarantee it would have been diagnosed in time to have a different ending.

The "buried in HIS t-shirt" story is not something you repeat IF you have any class at all.

It would be laughable if he wasn't our President. He seriously needs psychiatric intervention.....and etiquette and social instructors.

This story brings up a question I always have about Obamacare. If you can't afford health insurance now, how can you afford it just because it's mandated? What do you give up? Food, shelter, the things you need and use everyday? We don't go to the doctor everyday or sometimes every year, why pay for it?

In the movie "On the Town" at the end, the sailors are bailed out of their troubles with the police by a stirring patriotic speech given by one of the leading ladies. She sums it up with acknowledging that they did smash up a dinosaur in the museum but "If that dinosaur could talk, He'd say "Anything for one of our boys." and of course everyone cheers and passes the hat. Obama believes that everyone thinks, "Anything for you." and passes the hat.

It's too bad Obama couldn't have pitched in money to help that woman herself. But I guess like Michelle's been telling us, with the need to buy all that fruit to help their children with what she tells me is their weight problem, money was tight for the Obama household and their half-million-dollar income.

The options are a) he's a creep or b) the story is not true or c) all of the above.

eaglewingz08

Feb 5, 2010

I agree with the other perspicacious commenters. The woman was working for Obama since about 2008-for the past two years (and two years since diagnosis). Yet the democraps refused to give this poor woman health insurance, instead, they used her as a pawn and patsy against Pres. Bush and the republicans. Obama got 700 million or more in campaign donations, yet couldn't spare 6,000 to fund this woman's health care? For shame Obama.
As for the woman's wearing an Obama Tshirt in the coffin, maybe she was trying to drag Obama down to hell.

They all knew for four (4) years that this dear lady was struggling with cancer. They could have chipped in and made sure that she received the care that was necessary. Not only that, but there would have been any number of doctors that would have been willing to take care of this ladies needs free of charge. But, they weren't interested in her as a person, they were only interested in what she could do for them. HOW SAD!!
Really shows just what kind of person this knucklehead really is and just how much he is in love with himself. A real man would never have repeated such a story.

Jan: "...a question I always have about Obamacare. If you can't afford health insurance now, how can you afford it just because it's mandated? What do you give up? Food, shelter, the things you need and use everyday?..." ****** I understand what you're saying, Jan. But, the reality is those folks who can't afford health insurance now would not be paying for it when it's mandated. WE WOULD. Which brings up the whole point of BO passing ObamaCare in the first place: it's a way to re-distribute the wealth -- from those who can afford health insurance...to those who cannot afford it. That's why BO doesn't care about the details in the bill. His goal is not to improve health care. It's to re-distribute wealth.

Also, she had insurance btw... but a high deductible plan. So, its not like she couldn't get it. Its more an example of an unfortunante choice (ie, she might have been better served by an HMO)... so, Obama should be honest and say the real problem was too much free choice in healthcare. He'd rather make all the calls for people like this woman... for their own good.

Iowa State Men to Wear Pink for Breast Cancer - KCRG.com

AMES - The Iowa State men's basketball team will have a different look on Saturday when it takes the court at 1 p.m. against nationally ranked Kansas State on ESPN2. The Cyclones will sport pink shoes and jerseys with pink lettering to raise awareness for and help promote the fight against breast cancer.

The Cyclones are among four schools in the nation – Brigham Young, Illinois, Oregon – Nike has outfitted with pink-highlighted uniforms and shoes for the important cause. The ISU Athletics Department and Hy-Vee are teaming together to sponsor a "Pink Out" game in Hilton Coliseum on Saturday. Students in Cyclone Alley will don pink shirts and the general public is encouraged to wear pink clothing to the game.

Members of the Iowa State coaching staff already know the dangers of breast cancer. ISU head coach Greg McDermott's wife, Theresa, and graduate assistant Bryan Petersen's mother, Karen, are both breast cancer survivors.

The decision to wear pink this weekend was an easy one for McDermott.

"It's important for our team to help in this cause, and that is the fight against breast cancer," McDermott said. "I know first-hand the importance of early detection in the treatment of breast cancer. By wearing pink we hope to raise awareness at the national level so that women of all ages are reminded to be proactive with their health."

The McDermotts annually participate in "Hoops for Hope," a fundraising gala benefitting the American Cancer Society. Coaches from the three other Division I schools in Iowa plus marquee college basketball coaches across the nation visit Des Moines each year to raise money for the ACS.
