Mango Stops Colon, Breast Cancer Cells - Post Chronicle

U.S. researchers say the mango should be ranked as a super food despite its lower scores as an anti-oxidant.

Dr. SusanneTalcott, a food scientist at Texas AgriLife Research in College Station, says in terms of anti-oxidant power the mango does not come close to the blueberry, acai or pomegranate. The mango has four to five times less anti-oxidant capacity than an average wine grape.

Nevertheless, Talcott and her husband, Dr. Steve Talcott, tested mango polyphenol -- substances linked to good health -- extracts in the lab on colon, breast, lung, leukemia and prostate cancer cells.

The researchers found the mangoes had some impact on lung, leukemia and prostate cancers, but were most effective on the most common breast and colon cancers.

"What we found is that not all cell lines are sensitive to the same extent to an anti-cancer agent, but the breast and colon cancer lines underwent apotosis, or programmed cell death," Dr. Susanne Talcott says in a statement. "Additionally, we found that when we tested normal colon cells side by side with the colon cancer cells, that the mango polyphenolics did not harm the normal cells." (c) UPI

Facebook bra color question: Real breast cancer awareness effort, or ... - Modesto Bee

Posted: 13 Jan 2010 12:11 AM PST

It didn't take long. As the chain's popularity exploded - "pink," "purple," "I don't wear one" were among the countless posts - some key questions arose. Why were so many women suddenly mentioning their unmentionables? Was the effort legit or merely the latest example of slacktivism, a feel-good effort with little in the way of real results?

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization was among those asked if it was responsible. Andrea Rader, a spokeswoman for the group, said it did not launch the effort but called it "a terrific tool for raising awareness."

"We just hope people act on it," Rader said. "Get educated, get a mammogram."

Well-intentioned or not, by the weekend, the meme had degenerated into an even more invasive request.

"URGENT! FACEBOOK VIRUS ALERT," the subsequent mass status update reads. "An e-mail recently went out to women asking them to post the color of their BRA. THIS IS A VIRUS. To fix it, you must remove your bra, then go to > Settings > Enable Webcam > Record Movie. Please repost to your status message."

Something tells us that one definitely has nothing to do with cancer awareness.
