FORMER ``Survivor'' contestant Jennifer Lyon has died at age 37, dying of cancer after she mistook a lump in her breast for scarring from implants.

Lyon was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, the same year she finished fourth on the CBS reality show.

A network representative confirmed her death.

According to CNN, she told People magazine: "In the summer of 2004, I felt something in my right breast that didn't feel normal".

"I thought it was probably scar tissue related to my breast implants. So I let it go -- for a long time."

Lyon was raised in the Columbia River city of The Dalles.

Her biography on CBS.com says she attended Portland State and Western Oregon universities before graduating from Oregon State.

She joined the ``Survivor Palau'' competition as a nanny and graduate student from California.

Following her diagnosis, she became an advocate for breast cancer awareness.

``Survivor'' host Jeff Probst said in a statement he reconnected with Lyon several years ago and stayed in touch during her cancer treatment.

In his words, ``Her wisdom about how to live a life with quality seemed to grow with each passing day.''

Probst said Lyon died in Oregon.

37-year-old Jennifer Lyon, who in 2005, came in fourth on the CBS reality show "Survivor: Palau," passed away at her home after a five-year struggle against breast cancer.

According to an article on People.com, "The reality TV star was first diagnosed with stage-three breast cancer a few months after she wrapped 'Survivor,' and opted for a modified, radical bilateral mastectomy, followed by courses of chemotherapy and tamoxifen, a drug used to prevent recurrence.'"

"In the summer of 2004, I felt something in my right breast that didn't feel normal," Lyon told PEOPLE in October 2005. "I thought it was probably scar tissue related to my breast implants. So I let it go – for a long time."

Yet, Lyon stated that being on the physically demanding reality show elevated her spirits and instilled an inner strength within her to fight the deadly disease.

"Survivor taught me there's an end in sight," she told PEOPLE. "As hard as it is, it will be over, and you have to appreciate every day."

Jeff Probst, the host of "Survivor," spoke to Lyon prior to her death and talked about how the subject can be a difficult one to broach and often things are said that are meant to provide some comfort but end up coming out wrong though the sentiment, concern and true meaning still come across.

"She is the model of grace, and has been so brave," said Ian Rosenberger, a fellow "Survivor" contestant of Lyon's on Jan. 9 at the "Survivor" 10th anniversary celebration.

Yet, in spite of her illness, Lyon hosted several breast cancer research fundraisers. In fact, recently, Lyon opened a Christmas tree lot with proceeds going to the cause.
